Building an Autonomous Web Research Agent with OpenClaw: An End-to-End Tutorial

With the rapid evolution of AI, developers and creators are moving away from manually prompting web-based chat interfaces. Instead, the focus has shifted toward persistent, autonomous orchestration layers. OpenClaw is at the forefront of this movement.
Unlike standard LLMs that wait for your prompt in a browser tab, OpenClaw acts as a long-running, local gateway. It can schedule tasks, trigger custom “skills,” browse the web, and compose files on your local machine—all without human intervention.
In this hands-on tutorial, we are going end-to-end. We will build a Daily Market Intelligence Researcher using OpenClaw that automatically browses specified websites, extracts the latest news, summarizes the data, and formats a beautifully structured Markdown newsletter every morning.

Navigate to the skills directory and generate the scaffold:

The true power of OpenClaw lies in the SKILL.md file. It acts as both the metadata configuration and the system instruction prompt. OpenClaw provides built-in tools like search_web and write_to_file. Let’s configure them.

Do not ask for permission. Execute the full workflow autonomously from start to finish.
Phase 3: Testing the Autonomous Execution
Instead of waiting until 8:00 AM for the chron job to trigger, we can test our newly created skill manually using the CLI.

Inside the Orchestration Loop
When you execute this command, you can watch OpenClaw’s “Thought -> Action -> Observation” loop in real-time on your terminal:
- Ingestion: The agent reads
SKILL.mdand understands its objective. - Tool Call 1: The LLM uses
search_webto look up Generative AI news. - Observation: The built-in web scraper returns search engine snippets and URLs to the agent.
- Reasoning: The agent evaluates the headlines, deciding which are the most impactful.
- Tool Call 2: It formats a beautifully structured string of Markdown text.
- Tool Call 3: It executes
write_to_filespecifying the exact target directory.
Within a minute, you can open your Documents/Newsletters folder and find a meticulously formatted daily-brief.md file waiting for you!
Phase 4: Expanding Capabilities
Now that you have a functioning personal researcher, the possibilities are endless. Because OpenClaw interfaces with your system, you can extend the SKILL.md to:
- Social Media Management: Add a custom Python script tool that posts the generated Markdown directly to your Twitter or LinkedIn.
- Email Automation: Use an SMTP command tool so the agent emails the daily briefing directly to your inbox before you wake up.
- Competitive Analysis: Point the
